i danced with bencab!
just to heighten the suspense, i'll discuss the events of my saturday in chronological order.
early in the morning, we had a presscon for a mutya ng pilipinas winner who is a student at University of Baguio (more about my "new life" in a later post), vera reiter. she's very pretty, have to say.
in the afternoon, had an "impromptu" meeting. zzzz....
around 6, i was able to catch the opening of the exhibit of solana, padma perez's daughter, at cafe by the ruins. it was, as expected, peopled with the artsy set. so aside from looking at the art works, it was so wonderful to bask in their vibe. among the artists there were: kidlat tahimik's kids: kidlat, kawayan and kabunyian, frank cimatu, bencab, sir bob acosta, and my crush.(teehee!) solana is turning 12, but she and her friends, who sat with us at a table, spoke and conducted themselves like adults! the topic, though, was crushes--mimsy and i listened in amusement. i'm still all for staying childlike, though. too many people are in a rush to grow up. and growing up is overrated!
i chatted with a few more people, then katti whispered that we would watch spaceflower show later that night. yehey! i missed them and was very excited at the prospect of hearing them play again. because that meant i would inevitably dance!
when the crowd started to dissipate, we hugged solana goodbye, then mimsy, katti, sir bob, ray, and joyce went over to visco's for dinner. it had started to rain--just a gentle, refreshing rain. we had animated conversation over our plates of pasta, sharing each other's food.
then, we crossed the street to get to vocas. as it turns out, spaceflower show was playing there that night for the wedding party of hannah, lead singer of session road. and it was sort of "open to the public"--at least those who were "in the know". it was such a cool vibe when we got there.
the band was just finishing their soundcheck onstage. they were dressed in pastel suits. cute! soon after we settled at a spot near the stage, they started playing. looking around, i found that a lot of the artists that were at the ruins for the exhibit were there as well--yes, including bencab! at first, i wasn't even sure what hannah looked like because, though i had heard the band's songs, i'd never actually seen them play. soon enough, we spotted her (described by katti as "straight from a shampoo commercial"--to which i had to agree, and even add "and maybe a toothpaste commercial too") with her cute, mestizo groom, javy. they were dressed down, mingling with the crowd, inviting people to make the most of the open bar.
after a few songs, we could no longer contain ourselves, and trooped to the dance floor. what followed was a wonderful frenzy of dancing non-stop. at one point, mimsy whispered to me: "if you turn around, you'll be dancing with bencab"--and i did!
one of the guys there had a statement shirt on that said: "world without strangers", and that's exactly how it felt! it was so intoxicating to just dance! dance! dance! never mind if later on, we were already just a very dense mass of sweaty bodies on the dancefloor. and no, despite several offers, i didn't drink from anyone's glass. i don't need alcohol! after more than an hour of playing, and no one showed signs of slowing down, the band begged for a break, and different individuals just jammed onstage. til session road eventually took the stage and jammed nonstop. it was just so free-flowing and casual. hannah even sang a song she wrote for javy, titled "beautiful day", and they looked so in love! by 12, the day took its toll on me, and i had to say my goodbyes. mimsy and i left together, and we had the same observation: it was such an amazing way to celebrate a wedding (despite the fact we knew neither the bride nor groom), and we were so happy to have been part of it. i think it worked also because of the temperament of the two. javy plays the guitar too, so a music party, instead of the usual wedding reception programme, was just perfect! ang saya talaga dito sa baguio!
