joan, joan

i'm hooked on "joan of arcadia". i caught a few episodes on cable before, but wasn't able to follow the series. thankfully, my friendly neighborhood suki dvd seller just got the 1st season, and i'm already midway!
obviously, the title is a play on joan of arc, who talked to God, and who successfully put together an army to overthrow the british. just like the french joan, the series' joan is a "normal" teenager. i love that she's not super-religious or super-smart or outstanding. that would have alienated the audience. God takes different human forms, including a really cute teenager, and she tries her best to obey. it's such a layman look at how we're all part of a greater universe, that God has a plan for all of us, and that our relationships are causal. interestingly, i think the title song "what if God was one of us" is by joan osbourne.
if only i could just be told by God what to do every step of the way too. instead of having to discern, guess, conjecture or--horrors!--use my free will.
