a bit of art and culture
nanie, cely, and i grabbed some free chow at burgoo in rockwell last saturday (i'm doing an article on them), along with bubbles, a, pat, eric, amped, and xandro. new acquaintances. afterwards, we finally got a chance to go to the new, spruced up ayala museum in greenbelt. the entrance fee is P150. students get a discount. unfortunately, nanie and i weren't considered students, bec. the discount only applied to undergrads, apparently. argh!
we proceeded to view some great modern art by gabriel barredo (some chiz from the guard: he's a cousin of lea salonga). i loved his use of industrial materials. and to me, the statement was the dehumanization of the human race by technology and mechanisms. it was amazing--esp. since some of his art actually moved! (sorry, i don't know the "artsy" term for that. installation, is it?)
we then took the spacious elevator to the 4th floor, where we viewed Philippine church art from the 19th c. it was very educational, and i was impressed by how well-preserved the items were.
on the 3rd floor are the works of luna, amorsolo, and zobel. i loved luna's "woman with manton" and "la marquesa", which had me fixated. they were of the romantic style, i think. amorsolo's "at the market" was so sundrenched, i felt like i was looking at a photograph! i think it was the closest i'd been to an amorsolo, and the sunny atmosphere was fantastic! zobel's works were the most diverse--understandably, because he had the most training and exposure. we loved the sketches of the dog and pferd.
on the 2nd floor, we had a walking tour of the diorama of phil. history, whose last stop was about the EDSA revolution. i guess our concepts of history have become so convoluted, that they can't come up with "stops" about more recent events. sadly, some points of history were not familiar to me. have to brush up on my history! there was also an exhibit of tom epperson's photos. the highlight: several photos of fernando and JAZA on a giant trampoline. cute!
of course, on our way out, we had to take a photo of our fabulous museum day.
