nag-pahinungod

i've long wanted to join the ugnayan ng pahinungod, a program of UP launched some 10 years ago, to provide outreach activities to low-income and far-flung areas; thus, making the iskolar ng bayan more relevant to his or her country. but i never quite got around to it. until recently.
*pahinungod is a visayan word that's the closest Filipino word to "oblation"

my trip to the mt province was because of this. i had volunteered for the teachers' training program because i wanted to help, and also bec. i wanted to finally explore the mt. province. when sir jimmy, our coordinator, asked us (me and liezel, my co-teacher) to conduct a seminar instead of simply helping out, we hesitated for just a moment, then excitedly planned what we would teach. this was before the christmas break.
but we only finalized our plans a day before our departure! we would teach media and journalism, 1 track among 4. the other tracks would deal with: language, science, and social studies. we hurriedly prepared handouts and read up on our topics.
when we arrived in kin-iway, besao in mt. province, we found out that the teacher in charge of the social studies track would not be able to make it. so that night, it was decided that liezel and i would handle 2 different tracks. she would retain journalism, i would teach either film appreciation or computer literacy. i slept well, despite the uncertainty. early morning, i learned i was to teach film appreciation. so i had to look back on my previous lessons. and scramble for films i could show! thankfully, we found a copy of "the last emperor" and were able to borrow a dvd player.
the teachers who chose to attend my track were receptive enough. but sadly, they told me they didn't have enough equipment to use movies and other audio-visual materials as teaching aides. also, many of the houses didn't have TV sets. (lucky them, in a way!)
i suddenly realized all the subjects i could teach (broadcasting, advertising, film) were useless! well, maybe i could teach writing...
i'm actually looking for people now who want to help me buy VCDs of materials that they could use in their different schools. later on, maybe we can donate TVs and VCD players to them. but initially, i want to start small. but all of these will be done anonymously, because i don't have a foundation for the purpose, but will just ask our volunteers to forward these items to the schools concerned. let me know if you want to help!
