i want this book!

i have always been fascinated by mao tse-tung. it must be the whatever-small-percent chinese in me. i think the period of the cultural revolution is one of the most interesting in history. i have seen some wonderful movies about it, read some books about it, even took an elective on that period in history; but i never quite encountered a book solely on the life of mao--until now. i can't wait to get to fully booked ASAP to buy it! unless someone is going to buy it for me. (ahahaha! as if!) or LL is going to buy it and lend it to me...? but i'm really very excited to read it soon!

makes sense to me

Your Life Path Number is 11

Your purpose in life is to inspire others

Your amazing energy draws people to you, and you give them great insight in return.
You hold a great amount of power over others, without even trying.
You have the makings of an inventor, artist, religious leader, or prophet.

In love, you are sensitive and passionate. You connect with your partner on a very deep level.

You have great abilities, but you are often way too critical of yourself.
You don't fit in - and instead of celebrating your differences, you dwell on them.
You have high expectations of yourself. But sometimes you set them too high and don't achieve anything.

options

i'm generally enjoying baguio, and i've been told that i look happy (someone said: larawan ka ng isang babaeng masaya). but with recent events, i realize that maybe i should be looking at this not as a stop but as a stopover in my journey through life.
all of a sudden, opportunities and options are opening up for me to go to cebu, to mindanao, to the US, to europe. cindy's post opened my eyes to the fact that i don't have to limit my circle of friends to the ones i already have, and that my friends will remain to be so, wherever i may be. same with my family, and "families". LL's posts also reminded me that i still want to go to so many places--to ride around in a vespa in rome, to browse 2ndhand books in london, to swim the great barrier reef, to surf in hawaii, to visit mecca, to pilgrimage in the holy land, to walk the streets of tokyo.
maybe that's the reason why nothing's tying me down here. maybe i'm meant to satisfy my wanderlust by moving on, slowly but surely.
i don't know how to go about it yet, which to prioritize, but i think i may be heading in that direction in the long run.

getting up to (music) speed

i haven't been updated about music in recent months, so i find that i'm barraged with new songs (at least to my ears)--like i'm cramming to catch up with the rest of the radio-listening world. somehow, songs on instant replay in my head and mp3 player (yes, finally succumbed to temptation and bought one) have one theme.
narda
lagi mo akong dinedeadma

where are you

You Are Italian Food

Comforting yet overwhelming.
People love you, but sometimes you're just too much.

touch-me-not

i have no issues with signs of affection. i hug and kiss my relatives and friends. but i do have a problem with strangers--well, ok, acquaintances--reaching out and touching me, or grabbing my arm. it makes me very uneasy. very uncomfortable. even a little queasy. i guess there's just a certain kind of touch that agrees with you? i don't know. because i have some friends i'm not comfortable having close contact with, and others, whose hands i can't help but hold, or friends i can't help but hug. i'm weird? yes, i know that much. but really, sometimes, there's just a reflex that makes me recoil almost immediately from someone reaching out to touch me...sometimes, i am comfortable enough to move in closer on my own. i really don't know how to explain it. i just thought to write down my thoughts because of what happened this morning--that someone grabbed my arm and i really didn't feel comfortable at all. so i tried to subtley "struggle" out of the grasp.

deep soul-bearing

i don't love starbucks. not the watered-down coffee. not the (generally) pretentious vibe. not the super-expensive stuff. but i do love their couches, that are just perfect for long talks.
i had planned two meet-ups on sunday, one with LL and another with miel. but LL just had too many things to deal with, so we had to cancel. miel and i met up at the starbucks near her house at 11 am. i had planned to sprint over to megamall for the 1 pm screening of my former teacher's film, "sitak". but as the situation would have it, we talked hard-core til 5 pm. if my dad hadn't sent me a text reminding me we had to do some last-minute errands for my lolo, we wouldn't have adjourned yet. i love having those talks, the kind that usually just happen in high school and college--when we don't have appointments or deadlines to meet, or schedules to strictly follow. in high school, i would engage in talks like that in the library; in college, it was in an empty classroom, or along the wide corridors.
it wasn't just that miel and i hadn't seen each other in more than 3 months. it was because we had so much to unburden, so much to bare, so much to share--which made us even closer than we already are. we didn't just update each other on our lives, but discussed how people have touched our lives, how God has helped us all through it all, and what direction our lives are going. all over cups of coffee and slices of cake! can't wait to spend time in PG with miel soon!

THE perfect man

It was a lazy, rainy night, so my sister and i hung out at home and watched "the perfect man". hilary duf is not annoying, heather locklear is still so beautiful, and chris noth is gorgeous! a little heavy at the midsection, but still gorgeous mr. big...haaayy... the film is ok. on the spectrum of teeny-bopper movies, it's above average because of the presence of chris noth, but, predictably, not too meaty a story. still, good, light viewing, with some quotables:

"He could be anywhere in the world but he chooses to be with her because life is better with her by his side."

"It's like all of the bad stuff that you went through that you hated along the way: the people who disappointed you, the things that didn't go the way you wanted; suddenly, you feel grateful for them, because those are the things that got you to here, to this."

hanging out, catching up

for the last few nights, i've been having dinner with friends to catch up on each other's lives. i realize baguio is my home now too. i have friends here whom i miss, and i love hearing about what they've been up to, and telling them how i've been. there have been a lot of changes in my life recently--changing ideas, changing paradigms.
last night, i had dinner with a friend i hadn't seen since end of march. we talked for almost 3 hours at bliss cafe. as we were winding down, i chatted with the chef, shanti, who's really very yogi. jim, the co-owner, always needs to be reminded who i am, though. that's ok, no biggie. they introduced us to gari, whose photo exhibit is mounted at bliss for the month. turns out we have a lot of common friends. we talked about photographing kids, making short films, and living in baguio. i realized i'm now on the "other side": encouraging people not from baguio but who love it, to follow their bliss and relocate here. i hear people say: wow, buti ka pa! or ang tapang mo naman!
i don't know how long i'm here for, but i'm determined to love every moment.

PBB connection

this post is long overdue. i don't usually do the whole "i knew him when..." drill because, well, it's not my style. but since quite a few people watched "pinoy big brother: teen edition", i just wanted to share. when the show started, i just reacted with: what, another one? but a few weeks after it was launched, my tita mentioned over lunch: "hey, mikee, tita leny's son, is on PBB". now i remember that kid as an energetic, makulit, very smart 7-year-old. his family was my other tita's neighbor in UP, where i was staying when i was in college. his mom and my tita were close, his older brother and my cousin were friends, and basically, despite our varied ages, we hung out on a regular basis. mostly, they would come to the house, and mangungulit si mikee.
after hearing that he was on the show, i watched 2 episodes (though not in their entirety), to find out how the boy turned out. well, of course, he was much taller and a little darker, but still thin, and some mannerisms carried over from childhood.
a few weeks ago, on one of the few occasions that i caught "the buzz", i found out that they had declared a "big winner". i was happy to learn that mikee placed 2nd. wow, showbiz na siya, i guess. they even have a love triangle going there, over the winner, kim. how real that is, i don't know. the 3rd placer, gerald anderson (is that right?) is kind of cute. but he's, what, 16? 17?:O anyway, he said something really sweet about kim: "she's amazing!"--and with such sincerity. couldn't help but get kilig. yeah, yeah, sucker!:P
so that's about it. i don't anticipate any PBB connection in the near-future. thankfully, my sister's plans to audition for the show were scrapped. good thing too!

my teddy casiño connection

read an article in last sunday's PDI about teddy casiño. which led me to reminisce about my "encounters" with him... (cue elevator music)
i first met teddy when i was in high school and a member of the high school editors' guild (HSEG), and he was president of the college editors' guild (CEGP). even then, he was already a heartthrob. yes, present company guilty. i mean, come on, how could he not be? he was cute, tall, older, and spoke with such confidence and authority. but to be honest, CEGP was (is?) much more militant than HSEG. we were just these pa-cute nerd teenagers who found a way to socialize with like-minded teenagers.
then, many, many years later, came the estrada impeachment trials. and while most people were riveted by the young, bright lawyers on the side of the prosecution, i was mesmerized by teddy. he was a little chubbier, but still as cute as i remember. my dad, the revolutionary at heart, supported my choice of crush, of course. luckily, my sister had a project for social studies, and their group decided to interview teddy. and so, the nice, generous ate that i am, i accompanied them to teddy's house. of course, i didn't expect him to remember me from all those many years ago, but we chatted about common friends from that circle, and he invited me to become active in bayan muna. i fully intended to do so, so we exchanged numbers. however, things just didn't align at all, and however many times he let me know about meetings, i was never able to go. then, on that fateful day when GMA took her oath at the EDSA shrine, there he was--beside his then-girlfriend, who as it turns out, was a schoolmate of mine and active in the movement as well.
about a year and a half later, when i was working for E!, i encountered him again during one of the events we covered. i interviewed him, and this time, he remembered me. well, maybe not my name, but he remembered how we met again because my sister and her classmates had interviewed him.
my opinion of him never wavered. even when, some time after, i read in the newspaper that he had gotten married. i thought that was a beautiful union. if i'm not mistaken, his brother, who's a priest, co-officiated the wedding.
just a few months ago, before the feb. siege (threat?), he was at UP baguio, where he spoke at a forum.
truth be told, i admire him and the many like him who never tire of pakikibaka. i think it's more real to be involved and aware of the struggle of the majority of filipinos who really toil daily to survive. i don't know, maybe i just don't have the political will/courage to live that lifestyle. but i'm glad that there are still many filipinos like them who jolt us to reality and keep us on our toes. otherwise, we would be living our lives of zombie-like existence, working from sun-up to sun-down, caring for no one but ourselves.

thanks, rye!

rye read this post and sent me the mp3. sweet!

something to look forward to

just found out that they're making a movie about edgar allan poe starring robert downey jr. which makes me more excited? poe or bob? tough call. bob, as you know, is my husband. although, i call him "jhun" (after all, pinoy ako and jr. siya. haha!). but edgar allan poe is one of my favorite writers of all time. i remember poring over his stories in the library when we were in first year high school, and memorizing annabel lee in sophomore year. i even tried writing like him for a time--with all that darkness and creepiness. cool!
how could this movie go wrong? apparently, sylvester stallone is directing it. i love "rambo" and "rocky", but i'm not so sure about how he directs. nevertheless, jhun is a fantastic actor and he's sure to give justice to the role.

smart vs pretty

so, ok, people always say they put a premium on smarts, right? not! come on, it's a superficial world we live in, where the young, sexy and beautiful are used to sell anything from car paint to men's cologne. there are beauty pageants on every level--from ms. barangay bagong silang to ms world to ms universe, and everything in between. and to start them young, there are even pageants for little miss. so, really, how can you say that?
so when people pick on beauty queens because they're not that smart or can't communicate well, i just have to ask: oh, come on, she's a beauty queen, what do you want from her? if people wanted really smart girls, then there would be more quiz bees and we would laud the winners of battle of the brains and who wants to be a millionaire? (miss the time when those shows were all the fad! geeks/nerds like me were on top of the world!)
but if you ask me, i still thank God for my smarts. i may not be beauty-queen material, but i'm smart. each of us is equipped to live the life we were meant to live, i think.

especially for LL

LL has been feeling down. this is for you (courtesy of my sister)--love you!

"I hide in here afraid that the tears will flow. inside my box, darkness embraces me and silence fills my soul. but i must not show you this, you should not know. so i smile and bounce gaily each time you come and open me."

Jesus, take the wheel

i just recently heard this song, and the refrain describes exactly how i feel:

Jesus take the wheel
Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this all on my own
I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
To save me from this road I'm on
Jesus take the wheel

i danced with bencab!

just to heighten the suspense, i'll discuss the events of my saturday in chronological order.
early in the morning, we had a presscon for a mutya ng pilipinas winner who is a student at University of Baguio (more about my "new life" in a later post), vera reiter. she's very pretty, have to say.
in the afternoon, had an "impromptu" meeting. zzzz....
around 6, i was able to catch the opening of the exhibit of solana, padma perez's daughter, at cafe by the ruins. it was, as expected, peopled with the artsy set. so aside from looking at the art works, it was so wonderful to bask in their vibe. among the artists there were: kidlat tahimik's kids: kidlat, kawayan and kabunyian, frank cimatu, bencab, sir bob acosta, and my crush.(teehee!) solana is turning 12, but she and her friends, who sat with us at a table, spoke and conducted themselves like adults! the topic, though, was crushes--mimsy and i listened in amusement. i'm still all for staying childlike, though. too many people are in a rush to grow up. and growing up is overrated!
i chatted with a few more people, then katti whispered that we would watch spaceflower show later that night. yehey! i missed them and was very excited at the prospect of hearing them play again. because that meant i would inevitably dance!
when the crowd started to dissipate, we hugged solana goodbye, then mimsy, katti, sir bob, ray, and joyce went over to visco's for dinner. it had started to rain--just a gentle, refreshing rain. we had animated conversation over our plates of pasta, sharing each other's food.
then, we crossed the street to get to vocas. as it turns out, spaceflower show was playing there that night for the wedding party of hannah, lead singer of session road. and it was sort of "open to the public"--at least those who were "in the know". it was such a cool vibe when we got there.
the band was just finishing their soundcheck onstage. they were dressed in pastel suits. cute! soon after we settled at a spot near the stage, they started playing. looking around, i found that a lot of the artists that were at the ruins for the exhibit were there as well--yes, including bencab! at first, i wasn't even sure what hannah looked like because, though i had heard the band's songs, i'd never actually seen them play. soon enough, we spotted her (described by katti as "straight from a shampoo commercial"--to which i had to agree, and even add "and maybe a toothpaste commercial too") with her cute, mestizo groom, javy. they were dressed down, mingling with the crowd, inviting people to make the most of the open bar.
after a few songs, we could no longer contain ourselves, and trooped to the dance floor. what followed was a wonderful frenzy of dancing non-stop. at one point, mimsy whispered to me: "if you turn around, you'll be dancing with bencab"--and i did!
one of the guys there had a statement shirt on that said: "world without strangers", and that's exactly how it felt! it was so intoxicating to just dance! dance! dance! never mind if later on, we were already just a very dense mass of sweaty bodies on the dancefloor. and no, despite several offers, i didn't drink from anyone's glass. i don't need alcohol! after more than an hour of playing, and no one showed signs of slowing down, the band begged for a break, and different individuals just jammed onstage. til session road eventually took the stage and jammed nonstop. it was just so free-flowing and casual. hannah even sang a song she wrote for javy, titled "beautiful day", and they looked so in love! by 12, the day took its toll on me, and i had to say my goodbyes. mimsy and i left together, and we had the same observation: it was such an amazing way to celebrate a wedding (despite the fact we knew neither the bride nor groom), and we were so happy to have been part of it. i think it worked also because of the temperament of the two. javy plays the guitar too, so a music party, instead of the usual wedding reception programme, was just perfect! ang saya talaga dito sa baguio!

kilig

i was finally introduced to my crush friday night. he's married with children. and his wife is beautiful. pero crush lang naman e! he used to have longish hair, but now he's sporting a cropped 'do. hmm...not sure whether he looks better now or before. or just equally, though in different ways, cute. he has that manu sandejas vibe. and he was really nice and he speaks well. so... yun lang.:D

quoting "dream"

i was just thinking yesterday, and recalled some wonderful lines from "dream for an insomniac". the movie is not remarkable, but the lines are absolutely quotable:
"Anything other than mad, passionate love is just a waste of time. There are too many mediocre things in this world to deal with, love shouldn't have to be one of them."
"Choices are like connecting highways. They all take you to the same place. Some just take longer to get there."
"I am going to circumnavigate his soul until he is surrounded on all sides by my love."
"There is no chance at all. We are all trapped by a singular fate. No one ever finds the one." -Charles Bukowski
"In order to win, you must expect to win." - Dan Fouts
"Every action and pursuit is thought to aim at some good. The good has rightly been declared to be that at which all things aim." - Aristotle
"Knowledge comes, but wisdom lingers." - Lord Tennyson
"I am now a central part of your mind's landscape whether you care or do not." - Steven Morrissey
"I am troubled immeasurably by your eye. I am struck by the feather of your soft reply. The sound of glass speaks quick disdain and conceals what your eyes fight to explain." - Jim Morrison
"Remember, wherever you are, that's the place to be." - Mike Damone, Fast Times at Ridgemont High
"Worship the music, not the musicians." - Eddie Vedder
"The reasonable man adapts himself to the world. The unreasonable man persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the unreasonable man." - George Bernard Shaw
"Life can only be understood backwards." - Kierkegaard
"I wish I was like you, easily amused." - Kurt Cobain
"Love is all you need." - John Lennon

bonding with lolo and lola

i fetched my lolo and lola from the airport the other week. they had last visited from the US 3 yrs ago. they would've been over sooner, but my lola had to undergo emergency procedure, and she has finally recovered enought to make the trip.
when i first saw them, both in wheelchairs, i realized they had grown old. they looked happy enough, but what my dad had said is true: this may be their last trip here. their bodies may not allow the fatigue from the flight anymore. so i resolved to spend as much time as i can with them.
so i sat to talk with them almost every day. went, at their request, to eat with them as they joined old friends at seaside. went to pampanga with them to visit family friends.
now that i'm back in baguio, i find myself missing joking around with my lolo (the only lolo i've ever known, as my mom's father passed away when she was in college), and listenig to my lola try to teach me ilocano.
lola's birthday is next weekend, and by hook or by crook, i will be there. i didn't grow up with them, and i've only ever spent time with them whenever they visit here. i know i'll miss them when they leave.

musings

taking time off to mull over my life, and after meeting up with some old friends , i've realized that i have indeed reached a level of maturity. yes, despite my ongoing love for smileys, winnie the pooh, and astroboy, and my penchant for giggling, clowning around, and blurting out witticisms (at least, according to me)!
i no longer overanalyze and overread anything. my goodness, i remember a time when the littlest kindness shown to me by a guy, would send me daydreaming about us HHWW. now, i know better than to assume anything. lessons have definitely been learned in that regard.
i am more patient. "good things come to those who wait"--i definitely believe that. i used to think "oh, life's too short." but then, things seem to work out the way they're supposed to, even without my intervention-- so i no longer try to ask out anyone. it's just too much work, and i'm tired out. i will wait. if something comes, well and good. if not, no problem.
i understand more. maturity may be the key, because somehow, things that i would not have understood a few years ago, i understand in a flash now. i have more level-headed empathy, i suppose.

kasalan

"love is in the air" for several people i know...getting married and getting engaged... i went to my former officemates' marla and vhoie's wedding the other week. as nanie said, we witnessed the blossoming of that relationship, as they met in our former office, until it closed and we went our separate ways... but they stayed together somehow and are now based in saipan. it was a bit of a surprise that they were coming home to get married. good thing i was in manila at the time. it was a Christian wedding entirely in filipino. no doubt i'm pinoy--every word felt more poignant because it was in my language. i even got teary-eyed at some parts!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
it was also a chance to catch up with some, sadly, not all, officemates. i had forgotten how i looked all those years ago, til they all gushed about how i've slimmed down (more than 1 person used the word "sexy" haha! eeww!) and someone asked "since when have you been wearing dresses?". it was fun, and i needed the "excursion" to not-so-far-away cavite.

re-viewing cinema paradiso

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
it was given to me as a Christmas gift, but i just got around to watching the new version of "cinema paradiso". i watched it in college, and remember how nostalgic it was about film. this new version has 51 minutes of additional footage (so the publicity goes) and tells about whatever happened to his 1 great love.
some movies just make you uncomfortable when you watch it years after. i felt the same nostalgia for film, but some parts (the romance parts of it), i didn't like too much. must be age.
i am so fortunate to have been a part of that generation of film students who actually worked with film stock. there's something in the sensation of the it, the detail of it, that will always make film #1 on my list. i also love the old theaters. and i always love seeing "old italy".
the film is also by the director of "malena", and i can completely relate to his lament of the new trampling on the old. i think i have an european soul, bec. i can so relate to the visuals of not only old italian, but german, films. and also of european art.
ok, so i didn't so much like the love story. mostly bec., though i think it seemed so romantic when i first saw it, the idea of a guy following you around taking footage of you and standing outside your window every night--but NOT talking to you is just, here's the jaded realist in me, weird. as our priest said the other sunday, love is cognitive and affective: "how can you love someone when you don't know that person?"
i'm not sure, overall, if i appreciated the "closure" provided by the new story. it tells us what happened all those years ago, but changes our perspective about the characters. i rather think the movie went the right way the first time in delving on Toto's maturity and development, than on the love story and his "one great love".
nevertheless, here are some lessons to take to heart:
1) things happen for a reason
2) things happen as they are meant to
3) we shouldn't hold on to the past

*sigh*

Came across this poem again after a long time. Haayy... to be young and in love! Hmm... not sure if I'd like the actual experience, but this poem is a great read. Even the structure is refined.

All Because You Kissed Me Goodnight

- Sandy Roltan

I climbed the door and opened the stairs,

Said my pajamas and put on my prayers,

Then turned off the bed and turned into the light—

All because you kissed me goodnight.

Next morning I woke and scrambled my shoes,

Polished my eggs and toasted the news.

I couldn’t tell my left from my right—

All because you kissed me goodnight.

That evening, at last, I felt normal again,

So I picked up my mother and called the phone.

I spoke to the puppy and picked up a bone.

Even at midnight, the sun was still bright—

All because you kissed me goodnight.

simple pleasures

SOMEONE tagged me, so here i go...
Name ten of life’s simple pleasures that you like the most, then pick ten people to do the same. Try to be original and creative and not to use things that someone else has already used.

1. Sipping Benguet brew in Baguio. I was never a fan of plain, black coffee til I drank a cup of Benguet… and I only ever drink it in Baguio: at Ruins, Ebai’s, Volante, Cottage Gi’s, PNKY. Have yet to try to brew it at home. I suspect I won’t be able to duplicate the experience though.
2. Rain. As long as I’m not outside dripping wet. I’ve always loved looking out the window and writing or reading in the middle of a downpour.
3. Sleeping. I hardly dream anymore, but I always have a restful sleep.
4. Travel. The best thing about Baguio is that there are so many interesting, new places to explore just a jeep or bus ride away. I’m such a tourist! I take my notepad and scribble down things I notice along the way, I take TONS of photos, and I love learning so many new things first-hand. I have wanderlust!

5. Taking a nap. Work doesn’t give allowance for naps, but I love taking even a 30-minute catnap. It refreshes me.
6. Books. I go crazy at the sight of books. I love looking at them, touching them, browsing through them…and despite the fact that there are tons more at home I haven’t read, I love buying books. They’re my addiction.
7. Taking photos.
8. Yoga.
9. Spending time with my family and friends. Even just laughing over the most shallow things relaxes me. That’s why I take every chance to be with them, no matter what.
10. Hugging my rabbit and taking my dog for a walk. They’re my babies! I love them and I know they love me too.
Go tag yourselves if you feel like it!:)

beatles forever!

i bought my dad this CD:
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
and it has been on instant replay on the CD player for the last 2 days. erp! i mean, i love the beatles, though of course, not as much as my dad does...but i can only listen to a reggae-ized "hey jude" for so long! although, i have to say, they did justice to "obladi-oblada". haha!
so finally, an hour ago, i dug up my "i am sam" OST and gave it to him. poof! that's what's been playing now. haayyy... my ears are thanking me for the respite!
